Is the SATIVA strain of medical cannabis giving me anxiety?

Updated: Dec 20, 2023

There are two main species of cannabis: Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica. Both of these species have different physical and chemical properties, and the effects they produce can vary greatly. Cannabis sativa is known for producing a more energising and uplifting effect, while Cannabis indica is known for producing a more relaxing and sedative effect.

One of the most common reasons people use cannabis is to reduce anxiety, but some people have reported that sativa strains can actually increase anxiety symptoms. In this article, we will discuss the research surrounding the use of sativa cannabis causing anxiety and the need to incorporate an indica strain to reduce anxiety symptoms.

Sativa Cannabis and Anxiety

Anxiety is a common mental health disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. It can cause feelings of worry, fear, and unease that can interfere with daily activities. Many people use cannabis to help alleviate anxiety symptoms, but some individuals have reported that sativa strains can actually increase anxiety symptoms. Sativa strains are known for producing a more energising and uplifting effect, but this can sometimes lead to feelings of anxiety, paranoia, and nervousness.

A study conducted by Cuttler et al. (2018) found that people who used sativa strains of cannabis reported higher levels of anxiety than those who used indica strains. The study included 1,819 people who used cannabis for medicinal purposes, and they were asked to report their anxiety levels before and after using cannabis. The researchers found that people who used sativa strains reported a 31% increase in anxiety, while those who used indica strains reported a 14% decrease in anxiety.

Another study conducted by Blessing et al. (2015) found that cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis, can help reduce anxiety symptoms. CBD is found in both sativa and indica strains, but indica strains typically have higher levels of CBD than sativa strains. The study found that CBD can help reduce anxiety symptoms by interacting with the body's endocannabinoid system, which is responsible for regulating mood, appetite, and sleep and known for producing a more relaxing and sedative effect,

A study conducted by Russo (2011) found that indica strains are more effective than sativa strains for treating anxiety, pain, and muscle spasms. The study found that indica strains have a higher ratio of CBD to THC, which can help reduce anxiety symptoms without producing the psychoactive effects associated with THC.

Conclusion

Cannabis can be a useful tool for reducing anxiety symptoms, but it is important to choose the right strain. Sativa strains can sometimes increase anxiety symptoms, while indica strains can help reduce anxiety symptoms. It is imperative to understand that these two strains may not always have the same effect on different individuals. People have various different reactions to various terpenes and strains of medical cannabis.

If you experiences anxiety symptoms when using cannabis, incorporating the use of an indica strain may be beneficial. Indica strains typically have higher levels of CBD and lower levels of THC, which can help reduce anxiety symptoms without producing psychoactive effects. As with any medication, it is important to speak with a healthcare professional before using cannabis to treat anxiety symptoms.
